How to Plan a Private Tour in North India

What a private tour includes, how prices are calculated, and the questions to ask before you book.

A private tour means the car, driver and guides are for your group alone, and the itinerary is planned around you. It is the most common way international visitors travel in North India, and it costs less than many people expect, particularly for families and small groups who share the car.

What a private tour usually includes

  • A private air-conditioned car with a driver for the whole trip, including fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's food and lodging.
  • Local guides at the main sights in each city.
  • Hotels in the category you choose, usually with breakfast.
  • Airport and station transfers.

Entrance fees, meals, flights and trains may or may not be included. A good quote spells this out line by line.

How prices are worked out

There is rarely a single fixed price, because the cost depends on the size of your group, the vehicle, the hotel category, the season and how many days you travel. That is why most companies, including us, send a quote for your specific trip rather than publishing one price for everyone.

Choosing hotels

Hotels drive most of the cost. Comfortable three-star hotels are clean and practical; four- and five-star hotels add space and service; heritage hotels — palaces, forts and havelis converted into hotels — are one of the joys of travelling in Rajasthan and come in every price range. You can also book your own hotels and use only the car and guides.

Questions to ask a tour company

  • What exactly is included, and what is not?
  • Will we have the same driver throughout?
  • Are the guides licensed, and in which language?
  • How do payments work, and what is the cancellation policy?
  • Who do we contact during the trip if something goes wrong?

How booking works with us

You send an inquiry with your dates, the number of travellers and what you would like to see. We reply with a suggested itinerary and a quote. Once you are happy, we confirm the booking in writing, with the payment terms and the cancellation policy that apply. Nothing is booked until you confirm.
