Overview

This route crosses Rajasthan from north-east to south-west, and each stop has a different character: Jaipur's planned 18th-century city, the pilgrim town of Pushkar around its lake, Jodhpur below the cliff-top Mehrangarh Fort, and Udaipur among its lakes and hills.

No single drive is longer than about six hours, and the longest one includes the marble Jain temple at Ranakpur. The tour ends at Udaipur airport, from where you can fly to Delhi or Mumbai.

Highlights

  • Amber Fort and the old city of Jaipur
  • Evening by the ghats of Pushkar Lake
  • Mehrangarh Fort and the blue houses of Jodhpur
  • The carved marble pillars of the Ranakpur Jain temple
  • The City Palace and Lake Pichola in Udaipur

Day-by-day itinerary

    Drive to Jaipur

Leave after breakfast for Jaipur. In the late afternoon, walk through the bazaars of the walled city with your guide and see Hawa Mahal in the evening light.

    Drive to Pushkar

Drive to Pushkar, a small pilgrim town around a sacred lake with 52 bathing ghats. Visit the Brahma Temple, one of very few in India dedicated to the creator god, and watch the evening prayers on the ghats. Pushkar is a holy town: no meat, eggs or alcohol are served.

  6. Day 6

Questions about this tour

Can we stay in heritage hotels?

Yes. Rajasthan has many palaces, forts and havelis that are now hotels, in every price range. Choose "Heritage hotels and havelis" in the inquiry form and we will suggest options.

Can we add Jaisalmer and the desert?

Yes. Jaisalmer is about five hours from Jodhpur. Adding two nights there, including a night at a desert camp, makes this a 10-day trip.

When is the Pushkar Camel Fair?

The fair follows the Hindu calendar and falls in October or November. Hotels in Pushkar fill early during the fair, so tell us if you want to be there.
