Agra travel guide

The city of the Taj Mahal, and much more than one monument.

The Taj Mahal glowing in warm golden-hour light, Agra

Agra was the capital of the Mughal Empire at its height, and it holds three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and, a short drive away, Fatehpur Sikri. Most visitors arrive from Delhi for a few hours and leave the same day. Those who stay the night see the Taj Mahal at its quietest, at sunrise, and have time for the rest of the city.

India Tours Plan is based in Agra, so this is the destination we know best.

Why visit Agra

The Taj Mahal is reason enough. But Agra also has the inlaid marble tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, the riverside garden of Mehtab Bagh facing the Taj, an old city full of markets and street food, and craft traditions such as marble inlay that go back to the Mughal workshops.

What to see in Agra

  • Taj Mahal

The white marble mausoleum built by Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, completed around 1653. Open from about half an hour before sunrise to half an hour before sunset; closed on Fridays.

  • Agra Fort

The Mughal fort-palace on the Yamuna, rebuilt in red sandstone by Akbar and embellished in marble by Shah Jahan, who was later imprisoned there by his son.

  • Itmad-ud-Daulah

Known as the Baby Taj: a small marble tomb covered in stone inlay, built in the 1620s by Empress Nur Jahan for her father.

  • Mehtab Bagh

A Mughal garden on the opposite bank of the river, aligned with the Taj Mahal. The best place to watch the sunset over the Taj.

  • Fatehpur Sikri

About 40 km from Agra: the palace city Akbar built as his capital in the 1570s and abandoned soon after, with the great Buland Darwaza gateway.

  • Old Agra

The lanes around the Jama Masjid and Kinari Bazaar, with spice markets, sweet makers and wedding shops. See our Old Agra Walking Tour.

Planning your visit

How long to stay

One full day covers the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and the Baby Taj. One night lets you see the Taj at sunrise and add Fatehpur Sikri; two nights let you explore the old city as well.

Best time to visit

October to March is the most pleasant time. Winter mornings in December and January can be foggy, which sometimes hides the Taj Mahal at sunrise. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon arrives in July.

Getting there

Agra is about 230 km from Delhi on the Yamuna Expressway, roughly three and a half to four and a half hours by car, or about 1 hour 40 minutes by the fastest trains. Agra Cantt is the main railway station.

Travel tips

  • Visit the Taj Mahal at opening time for soft light and fewer people.
  • Only small items are allowed inside the Taj Mahal: a phone, camera, water and a small bag. Food, tripods and large bags are not.
  • Buy tickets from the official sources or through your guide. Ignore anyone who offers to "skip the queue" for extra money outside the gates.
  • Shops selling marble inlay vary widely in quality and price. There is no obligation to buy anywhere your guide takes you.

Opening hours, fees and seasonal conditions change. We confirm current details when we plan your trip.
