The Golden Triangle is the name given to the circuit linking Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. On a map the three cities form a rough triangle, each side four to six hours by road. Together they give a first-time visitor the Mughal monuments of Delhi and Agra, including the Taj Mahal, and a first taste of Rajasthan in Jaipur.
This guide walks through the decisions that shape a good Golden Triangle trip.
Choose the direction
Most tours run Delhi, then Agra, then Jaipur, and back to Delhi. That order works well because the Delhi–Agra road is fast and the Taj Mahal comes early in the trip, while you are fresh.
Two things can change the order:
- Fridays. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, so your Agra day must fall on another day.
- Where you go next. If you are continuing into Rajasthan, finish in Jaipur rather than driving back to Delhi. If you are flying to Varanasi, finish in Agra or Delhi.
Decide how many days
The minimum is three days, which is tiring. Four days is comfortable; five lets you enjoy each city without early starts every morning. We explain the trade-offs in detail in How many days do you need for Delhi, Agra and Jaipur?
Pick the season
The main travel season runs from October to March, when days are warm and dry. December and January bring cool nights and, on some mornings, fog that can hide the Taj Mahal at sunrise. From April to June the heat is intense, often above 40°C; sightseeing is still possible early and late in the day. July to September is the monsoon, with green landscapes, fewer visitors and some rain most days.
Get around: car, train or both
A private car with a driver is the most popular choice because it takes you door to door, lets you stop when you like, and allows stops at places like Fatehpur Sikri and the Abhaneri stepwell that are hard to reach otherwise. Read What to expect from a private driver in India.
Fast trains link Delhi with Agra in under two hours and are a good alternative for the first leg. Trains between Agra and Jaipur are less convenient, so most people drive that stretch.
Decide what to book early
- Hotels in the peak months, especially around Christmas, New Year and Diwali.
- Train tickets, if you want the fast Delhi–Agra trains. They sell out at busy times and foreign travellers need passport details to book.
- Ranthambore safaris, if you are adding the national park. Permits are limited and are released in advance.
- Guides in languages other than English.
Leave room for the unplanned
Some of the best moments on a Golden Triangle trip are not on any list: a chai stop at a roadside dhaba, a wedding procession in Jaipur, a quiet half hour in the gardens of Humayun's Tomb. Build in a free afternoon if you can.
