Bharatpur travel guide
Keoladeo, a UNESCO-listed wetland for birds, an hour from Agra.
Bharatpur, in eastern Rajasthan, is best known for Keoladeo National Park, often called the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. The wetland was created in the late 19th century by the rulers of Bharatpur as a duck-shooting reserve; today it is a protected park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the best places in India to see water birds.
The town itself was the capital of a Jat kingdom, and its mud-walled Lohagarh Fort resisted a long British siege in 1805.
Why visit Bharatpur
More than 350 bird species have been recorded in Keoladeo, including painted storks, herons, cormorants, kingfishers and owls, with ducks and geese from Central Asia arriving in winter. The park is flat and quiet, with no motor traffic inside, so it suits families and non-specialists as well as keen birders. It is also an easy addition to a trip between Agra and Jaipur.
What to see in Bharatpur
Keoladeo National Park
Wetlands, grassland and woodland crossed by a raised track. Explore on foot, by bicycle or by cycle rickshaw; many of the licensed rickshaw drivers are skilled at spotting and naming birds.
Lohagarh Fort
The "iron fort" of Maharaja Suraj Mal, built in the 18th century with thick earthen ramparts and a moat, with a small museum inside.
Deeg Palace
About 35 km north of Bharatpur: the garden palaces and fountains of the Jat rulers' summer retreat, an optional half-day excursion.
Fatehpur Sikri
Akbar's abandoned capital lies about 20 km away, on the road to Agra, and is easy to combine with the park.

Planning your visit
How long to stay
One night lets you spend the early morning in the park, which is the best time. A day visit from Agra is possible, but you will miss the first light.
Best time to visit
From about October or November to February, when migratory birds are present. Painted storks and other resident birds nest in the late monsoon and autumn. Summer is very hot and the wetland can be dry.
Getting there
Bharatpur is about an hour and a half by road from Agra and three and a half to four hours from Jaipur. Bharatpur Junction is on the main Delhi–Mumbai railway line.
Combine it with
Bharatpur lies between Agra and Jaipur, about 55 km from Agra. A popular route is Delhi – Agra – Fatehpur Sikri – Bharatpur – Abhaneri – Jaipur, and it pairs well with Ranthambore for a wildlife-focused trip.
Travel tips
- Arrive at the park gate when it opens; activity falls off as the day warms up.
- Bring binoculars, water and a hat. Hiring a naturalist or an experienced rickshaw driver makes a big difference.
- The Siberian cranes that once made the park famous have not returned for many years, so do not plan a trip around them.
